Emigration
of Koreans to the U.S. surged in early 1970, and
they settled mostly large cities such as New York
City. Various local civic associations and religious
institutions estimate that over 400,000 Korean immigrants
reside in the New York metropolitan area. When they
settled, they invited their parents so as to live
as one family unit, and their inviting parents resulted
a creation of instant senior population. The history
of Korean emigration is less than 3-decades old,
and yet almost 10% of Korean immigrants are senior
citizens. Most of the Korean immigrant seniors are
ill prepared to make social, economic, psychological
and physical adjustments to newly found home. There
is urgent need to provide them services. |

In1993,
the Korean-American Senior Citizens Counseling Center,
Inc., KASCCC, was established as a community based,
Not-for-Profit organization. Its creation was facilitated
by Mr. Hyungbin Im who throughout his tenure as an
officer of a Korean fellowship organization felt
urgent needs for a community based organization able
to provide human services to recent immigrant Korean
seniors in their native language. After consulting
with and having obtained support from the Korean
community leaders, he began operating KASCCC in Flushing
that is the home to the largest Korean-American immigrant
senior population in New York City to fulfill the
following mission: |

The
mission of the agency is to enhance the quality
of life by identifying issues and problems facing
Korean-American immigrant seniors, by facilitating
communication between Korean-American senior population,
governmental agencies and social service agencies,
and by educating them to have tools to become self
reliant. |

In
1995, Dr.
Giho Kim became Executive Director of the
agency. He originally came from Korean, educated
in the U.S., and had a career in business. His background
in two cultures, high-level education and professional
career has had significant impact on the agency's
program implementation and capacity building. |
